Prominent Figures

"The Golden Age" (The '50s - '60s)

  • Dr. William Forge - American physicist. Inventor of the Monaco Device, the Hammer-Monaco Device, and the Inhibitor Ray.
  • Grace Kelly & Cary Grant - American movie star/superheroes. The first two recipients of extraordinary abilities from the Monaco Device. They briefly became international superstars before helping end the Vietnam War and then retiring into seclusion. It's believed that they went on to secretly travel the world, helping build villages and farms for impoverished nations all around the world. The last confirmed sighting of them was during the War for Los Angeles when they re-emerged to stop Hammer Lord.
  • Alfred Hitchcock - British filmmaker. Vanished shortly after the Monaco Device incident and reemerged decades later during the War for Los Angeles as the super-powered "Director."
  • James Carreras - Co-founder of Hammer Film Productions and funder of The Hammer Project to replicate the effects of the Monaco Device.
  • Mister Hammer (Bert Rosenby) - C-list actor-turned-superhero thanks to the Hammer Project, and one of the first two new super humans after Grace Kelly & Cary Grant. Depowered during the Hammer Films Backlot Brawl and later became the villainous Hammer Lord.
  • Hammer Gal (Tricia Hamilton) - C-list actress-turned-superhero thanks to the Hammer Project, and one of the first two new super humans after Grace Kelly & Cary Grant. Later retired to pursue politics in the '80s and '90s as one of the representatives of the Superhero Party.
  • Hammer Lad (Jack Raiser) - Comedian hired by Carreras to become Hammer Lad as the replacement for Mister Hammer. Later retired to pursue politics in the '80s and '90s, eventually becoming the President of the United States in 1989.

"The Tarnished Age" (The '70s - '80s)

The '70s and '80s were an explosion of superheroes and supervillains in the United States, including many who only operated for a year or two. Supervillains, in particular, were constantly rotating through the "super gangs" that started emerging during this time.

  • Jumpin' Jack (Jack Coolidge) - British inventor who became a superhero using his piston-powered "Jumpin' Suit." Moved to Boston seeking revenge against The IntelliGentleman Bandit, a British gang leader who had killed his family.
  • Electro Sista (Maggie Brown) - Car manufacturing plant secretary by day, genius inventor Maggie Brown fought street crime in her hometown of Detroit using her "Dy-No-Mighty Electro Rod."
  • Peacenik (Real name unknown/forgotten) - Part of the Hippie/"Flower Child" movement, Peacenik was a San Francisco-based super villain who accidentally gave himself mind-control powers when he used an old Monaco Device as a bong to smoke marijuana and began terrorizing the San Francisco Bay Area in his attempts to "spread peace & love."
  • Gangbuster (Nate O'Leary) - NYC-based superhero and one of the first-known cases of people born with powers inherited from Monaco Bath-experimenting parents. Would later be one of the poster examples of registered superheroes as NYC's registered hero.
  • Crimson Cowboy (Mickey Fonzoni) - Providence-based mobster and boss of "The Providence Posse," who began committing "Spaghetti Western"-themed crimes all around New England during the 70s.
  • The IntelliGentleman Bandit (Richard Dunby) - British smuggler/gang leader-turned-supervillain based out of Boston and arch-rival of Jumpin' Jack. Possessing an incredibly high intellect and the natural abilities of a con man, he fooled nearly everyone into thinking he possessed mind-reading abilities.
  • G-Street (Nathan Gaines) - Once just a small-time tough on the streets of Detroit, Nathan's life took a turn when he found the half-finished remains of a Monaco Device belonging to a local thrill seeking entrepreneur. In order to get the device working, he decided to try plugging it right in to a massive power station - It nearly fried him, but he survived and found that the accident had given him electricity-controlling superpowers that he used to begin building his own criminal empire.
  • Antonio Salvatore - An accountant and overall "brain" working for one of NYC's Latino gangs, Salvatore developed rocket boot technology using materials and tools found during a heist and used it as the basis of founding a new gang: The high-flying Diablos Voladores.
  • Jane Lightning (Jane Rodaine) - Sometimes a hero, sometimes a villain, Jane Lightning gained her sound-manipulating powers from an accident involving a Monaco Device, a high-powered tube amp, and a few thousand decibels of electric guitar. It destroyed the music venue she was playing in, injured a dozen audience members, and landed Jane in the hospital - Her career as a musician was finished and so she used her newfound powers that she'd been given to go on a fame-seeking crime spree.
  • El Cruzado Cubano (José Arruza) - Tired of watching the emerging drug trade take over his hometown Miami, José decided to take matters into his own hands, adopting the mantle of "The Cuban Crusader" and fighting crime using his homemade arsenal of gadgets.
  • Hammer Lord (Bert Rosenby) - The villainous new identity of Bert Rosenby (prev. Mister Hammer) when he waged the War On Los Angeles in the late '80s. Desperate to recover his powers after being depowered, he subjected himself to years of experimentation and developed the ability to mimic the abilities of other superpowered beings. He was finally flown into the sun by The Director to end the battle and his current whereabouts are unknown.
  • The Director (Alfred Hitchcock) - During the War for Los Angeles, Alfred Hitchcock reemerged as the mysterious "Director," revealing that the whole time he had secretly had telekinetic powers the entire time - So powerful he could practically manipulate matter on the cellular level. It's unknown whether these were his innate abilities or if he had also been given powers by The Monaco Effect. Some conspiracy theorists speculate that he may have been manipulating events behind the scenes the entire time and be the true origin of The Monaco Effect…

"The Blackout" (The '90s)

After the SuperCrime Act was passed, superhumans faded into near obscurity for the '90s, though some new heroes and villains (as well as mainstays from the '80s) did continue to operate in defiance of the SCA. Many of these new heroes were teenagers born with powers due to their parents being exposed to the Monaco Effect in the past and it created a new "punk superhero" scene.

  • President Jack Raiser - After the War For Los Angeles and the passing of the SuperCrime Act, Hammer Lad decided it was time to hang up the tights and make change in a different way. Becoming an advocate for superhuman relations and a leader of the registered superhero movement, he was elected president in 1989. He served a very effective two terms, ushering in a new era of peace before finally stepping down in 1998 and retiring in seclusion like Cary Grant and Grace Kelly before him.
  • Le Stark Raver (Jean-Claude Deplonge) A teenage DJ/techno music producer originally from France, Jean-Claude moved to Chicago to pursue his music career. Fascinated by the superhero history of the United States, he eventually discovered a vinyl recording of '70s/'80s supervillain Peacenik and realized that he could reverse-engineer the mind-control frequency. Making his own custom mind control "Rave Suit" rigged up with high decibel speakers and other gadgetry, he started cleaning up the streets as Le Stark Raver.
  • Thrashdown (David Clerk) - Leader of The Thrashers, a group of skateboarding supervillains. Thrashdown made them all souped-up skateboards that they used to commit their crimes.
  • The Hawk (Anthony Hawk) - In another world, Los Angeles-based teenager Anthony Hawk might have simply been a professional athlete, but when Anthony got his hands on one of the souped-up skateboards used by The Thrashers, the criminals harassing his neighborhood, he knew it was his destiny to fight back as a hero.
  • Acid Wash and Boot Cut (Tommy and Miles Hagar) - Twin brothers Tommy and Miles discovered their latent powers when they were pre-teens: Tommy could surround his body in a layer of highly potent acid, while Miles could harden his body into a series of blade-like edges. Taking on secret identities because of the SuperCrime Act, Tommy & Miles fought crime in their hometown of Los Angeles through their high school years and would eventually become full-time heroes after the SuperCrime Act was repealed.
  • The Mighty Ooze! (Nicholas Zolinski) - An ostracized nerd growing up in New York City in the wake of the superhero boom, Nicholas really really wanted superpowers and, when they didn't show up by the time he finished high school, he decided that he would do whatever it took to get them. Enlisting the help of the superpowered black market, (including many of the same people who had helped Hammer Lord get his new powers) Nicholas subjected himself to incredibly painful experiments until he finally got his powers. Sort of. Reduced to a slime-like protoplasmic state, Nicholas took on the name The Mighty Ooze!, founded his supergroup "The Evil Punchers" and did his best to help stem the tide of super gangs still operating in NYC.
  • Flannel Whatever (Diana Chang) - Growing up in Seattle's grunge scene, Diana felt the pressure to take on the popular "apathetic teenager" persona of the day so when her incredible super strength emerged during middle school she took on an apathetic superhero persona to match: Flannel Whatever. Secretly, however, Diana loved being a superhero and had to contain her enthusiasm constantly.
  • Sue Sue Suicide (Susan Daveport) - New York-based punk superhero Susan Daveport discovered her powers the hard way when she tried to kill herself. She pulled the trigger, everything went black… But then she woke up again, her skin now bulletproof. Sue Sue Suicide's powers mean that whenever she dies, she comes back again, now with resistance to whatever just killed her. If she drowned, she gets gills. If she got stabbed, she becomes immaterial. But there's a downside (besides needing to die to get these new defenses); she can only do one of these things at time, and the results are unpredictable. If she was crushed under falling debris, will she come back with super strength? Or intangibility? Or super speed to get out of the way? Understandably, her powers make her pretty depressed, and she's got a cynical view of life.

"The Monaco Renaissance" (The '00s - Present)

When the SuperCrime Act was repealed in October, 2002 many formerly-underground super beings started operating publicly. Some were old mainstays who had started in the 80s, others were ones had operated in secret in the 90s, and others were brand new. Many new young operators also took on the personas and identities of older heroes and villains.

  • Compass Rose (Rose Weber) - The daughter of ex-super gang members, Rose's parents went straight long before she came along, but she was still born with powers left over from their Monaco Effect tinkering. Now living in a nice home in New York, when Rose was born with the ability to manipulate gravity they kept it very quiet. It wasn't until she was 16 years old that she used her powers full-force for the first time, to help stop 9/11. Arrested for breaking the SuperCrime Act, Rose became a very public figure during the trials and months leading up to the Act's repeal. After she was let go, Rose embraced her new superhero identity and went on to enthusiastically lead a new generation of teenage superheroes under her "hero name" of Compass Rose.
  • Earl Mitchum - The son of NYC's registered superhero, Gangbuster, (and thus one of the few third-generation Monaco Effect babies at the time) Earl was born with his dad's same super strength and durability. Quiet and shy, Earl had no interest in going into the superhero game like his dad. Instead, he was content to keep his powers hidden forever, until 9/11 when he helped his dad divert the Twin Towers disaster. Thrown into a media circus, Earl was expected to become a figurehead for repealing the SuperCrime Act but his shyness was too much. Even once the Act was repealed, Earl largely faded into the background, only occasionally being dragged out to help during superpowered conflicts.
  • Smash Queen (Diana Chang) - Previously fighting crime under the name Flannel Whatever, when the grunge movement started to fade Diana could finally express her natural bubbly enthusiasm for super heroics. She took on the new identity of Smash Queen and has become well-known for her constantly-rotating and ever-flashy wardrobe of costumes. She has since moved to NYC (the new capital of superhero activity) and become a pillar of the new superhero community and a hero to many of the younger heroes who emerged during this period of time.
  • Eternal Susan (Susan Daveport) - After her punk years as Sue Sue Suicide in the '90s (and dying approximately 712 times in the process), Susan left the country and went to Tibet in search of peace. She took up meditation and lived a monk's lifestyle for the next 5 years, and her new teachers helped her come to terms with the strange immortality she had been blessed with. She learned to focus, looking back through her past lives, and developed the ability to use the added experiences of these past lives (and deaths) to "read" the universe - She now has limited precognition and greater control over the powers she'll receive with each reincarnation. Sensing that trouble was on the horizon, she went back to NYC and is a strong (though sometimes aloof and mysterious) mentor to the new heroes there.
  • 8-Bit (Mike Montgomery) - Nerdy Detroit-based superhero with the power to turn himself into a spectrum of electric and electronic impulses, Mike learned to use his powers to travel via phone lines, hack into computers, and control electronic systems. The son of former superhero Maggie Brown (aka. Electro Sista), Mike actually inherited his powers from his dad, who had once been a member of super gang The G-Street Gentlemen.
  • Hammer Lord II (Damien Rosenby) - Los Angeles-born Damien is the illegitimate grandson of Lord Hammer and inherited his grandfather's ability to mimic the superpowers of others. Even at only age 17, he believes that becoming the most feared super villain in the world is his birthright and so he started amassing his criminal empire early.
  • Jumpin' Jackie (Jacqueline Coolidge) - Boston-based daughter of the original Jumpin' Jack, thrill-seeking Jacqueline found her dad's Jumpin' suit from the 80s and decided that she wanted to use it to fight crime with the new generation of heroes. Although he opposed at first, her dad eventually became her mentor, helping her keep making the Jumpin' suit better and better.
  • Gearshift (Adam Ng) - A NYC-based web designer by day, superhero by night, Adam Ng was born with the ability to speed up, slow down, or (temporarily, in extreme instances) reverse the flow of time within his vicinity. A few years older than most of the teenage superheroes operating in NYC, he often gets tired by their drama and goes solo for weeks at a time, though he always seems to come back. Rumors abound that he has feelings for Compass Rose…
  • Rat King (Neil Worthington) - Born the son of rich yuppies on Long Island, Neil's latent power to talk to rodents came on so quickly that he lost his mind. Though his parents tried to help him, the embarrassment of having such a mentally damaged son led to them sending him away to a mental hospital in the city. He had only been there a few months before he escaped, fleeing into the sewers to live with the rats that whispered to him at night. Now disowned by his family, Neil lives under NYC as "Rat King" and has vowed his revenge on rich surface-dwellers and often makes plots targeting his parents and their elite social circle.
  • Big Brain! (Aki Shito) - At 17, Aki is already one of the most powerful telekinetics on the planet (and possibly the most powerful since "The Director" himself), and she adores being a superhero. The leader of We Stop Evil! Kick Its Head!, Aki commonly uses her telekinetic powers to build giant anime-inspired mecha to fight evil.
  • Monster Boss (Mori Shito) - Mori was serious and business-minded his entire life; intent on taking over from his father as CEO of the family's technology company. But no one knew that, since he was a child, Mori had been keeping an amazing secret: He had the power to bring imaginary creatures into the real world. For most of his life he squashed this down and suppressed it, not wanting everyone to think he was crazy, but at age 26 when the family company was bought out and he was fired he lost his mind a little bit. Letting loose his imaginary creations for the first time, they manifested as giant monsters that he used to try and destroy Tokyo. Since that day, he has been a frequent enemy of We Stop Evil! Kick Its Head!
